What is the Responsible AI Use Campaign (RAIUC)?
RAIUC is a practical framework designed to help organisations use artificial intelligence responsibly.
Rather than focusing on how AI systems are developed, RAIUC looks at how AI is used in day-to-day business. Organisations make a public commitment to 10 clear principles covering areas such as transparency, oversight and accountability.
The aim is simple: to give organisations a clear way to show that they are taking the responsible use of AI seriously.
Is RAIUC a not-for-profit organisation?
Yes. RAIUC operates on a not-for-profit basis.
Declaration-based certification, annual renewal and access to member resources are provided free of charge. RAIUC is independent and does not operate as a government regulator or statutory accreditation body.
Who is RAIUC for, and do we need to be an AI company?
No. You do not need to be an AI company, and you do not need specialist technical knowledge.
RAIUC is intended for any organisation that uses AI, or expects to use it, and is able to commit to all 10 Responsible AI Commitments. That could include a small business, a large company, an individual team or a department using tools such as ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini or similar services.
The framework is particularly relevant to organisations using AI in everyday work, including writing, research, analysis, customer support and decision-making. It is not limited to organisations that build or develop AI systems.
What does certification involve?
RAIUC declaration-based certification is based on a public commitment to follow the 10 Responsible AI Commitments.
The process has been designed to be straightforward and accessible, without requiring technical expertise or a complex audit process.
The commitments cover important areas of responsible AI use, including:
- Transparency
- Human oversight
- Data protection
- Bias awareness
- Responsible use of AI-generated content

Is RAIUC declaration-based certification free?
Yes. There is no charge for the 10 commitments, initial certification, annual renewal, member resources or guidance.
RAIUC is committed to keeping these core elements free.
How long is a certificate valid?
A RAIUC declaration-based certificate is valid for 12 months from the date it is issued.
How does renewal work?
RAIUC certification lasts for 12 months. Renewal remains free: the organisation signs in, reviews the 10 commitments again and confirms that the selected organisation or department still meets them.
The renewed certificate receives updated validity dates. The previous certificate record and its history are retained, while expired certificates are clearly identified so verification remains transparent.
What happens if an organisation breaches a commitment?
RAIUC certification records an organisation’s declaration that it intends to follow the 10 Responsible AI Commitments. If credible information suggests that a certified organisation is acting materially contrary to those commitments, RAIUC may review the matter and ask the organisation for clarification or corrective action.
Depending on the circumstances, the certification may be corrected, suspended, withdrawn or allowed to expire. RAIUC will aim to act fairly and proportionately, and certification does not prevent other legal, regulatory or professional action where applicable.
Can certification be withdrawn?
Yes. RAIUC may withdraw or suspend certification where information supplied was materially inaccurate, the certification mark is used misleadingly, an organisation no longer meets the commitments, or continued certification could mislead the public.
A withdrawn or suspended certificate is no longer valid and must not be presented as current. Where appropriate, the public verification record will clearly show its status.
Can a department certify separately?
Yes. A department, team or business unit may apply separately where the scope is clearly identified during certification and the people responsible for that area can commit to all 10 Responsible AI Commitments.
The department name appears with the organisation on the certificate and verification record so that the scope of certification is clear. Departmental certification must not be presented as covering the entire organisation.
What happens when a certificate expires?
A RAIUC certificate is valid for 12 months. When it expires, the public verification record identifies it as expired and the certification mark must no longer be presented as current.
Renewal remains free. The organisation signs in, reviews the 10 commitments again and confirms that it still agrees to follow them. The renewed certificate receives updated validity dates, while the previous certificate history is retained.
Does certification guarantee legal compliance?
No. RAIUC certification is declaration-based and does not constitute legal approval, regulatory accreditation, an independent audit or a guarantee that an organisation complies with every applicable law.
Organisations remain responsible for understanding and meeting their own legal, regulatory, contractual, technical and professional obligations. They should obtain specialist advice where appropriate.
